Inyan
Inyan (Stone) is the oldest and wisest of our ancestors. These plaster installations are made to honor the life giving cycles created by the relationship between Mni (water) and Inyan (Stone).
These works are inspired by walks through intermittent stream beds in mountains in New York, California, and South Dakota. An intermittent stream occurs when groundwater provides water for stream flow seasonally. When it rains or when snow melts the water flow is heavy allowing pathways for the runoff to move toward larger water. When there is little precipitation there is only a stream bed, leaving the smooth rocks to tell the story of Mni's journey.
Recent, new behaviors of intermittent streams are indicators of the changing climate. Scientists watch them to estimate the risks for floods, fires, and drought.
